Alienoid: Return to the Future is a South Korean science fiction fantasy film directed and written by Choi Dong-hoon, set to premiere in 2024. It is the second part of the series, following the first installment’s Alienoid which premiered in 2022. This film mixes even more genres than the previous part, including science fiction, time travel, fantasy, martial arts, and action within a complex, multi-dimensional frame.
Synopsis
The plot begins from the closing scene of the previous installment. The forward-looking warrior Lee Ahn, played by Kim Tae-ri, is still stuck in the past and continues her efforts to get ahold of The Divine Blade, which is an ancient relic that can unlock the time gate. Ahn’s mission is to halt a terrible explosion in the future and return to it before it occurs. This explosion is triggered by haava, a perilous alien substance that was set in the timeline by an alien known as The Architect. If unleashed, haava is capable of rendering humanity extinct.
Quite literally, the wires surrounding Ahn’s necks start to smoke. With the time running out, Ahn must open the time gate and prevent the destruction. She only has 48 minutes before detonation of the explosive.
Her mission is accompanied by Mureuk (Ryu Jun-yeol), a Taoist monk who has become an outburst of an enigmatic presence which hints an extraterrestrial influence. As Mureuk spirals into increasing bouts of uncontrolled violence, a pair of elite mages from the Samgaksan sect — Heug-seol and Cheong-woon — are sent to hunt him down. They think Mureuk has an alien being inside him and want to eliminate the danger.
At the same time, the search for the Divine Blade attracts the interest of a few other powerful characters. Neung-pa, a warrior with eyesight problems, anticipates the blade can bring his vision alive. On the other side, Ja-jang, a malicious villain, covets the blade for his selfish motives. These factions converging towards a single aim have led to battles across Korean territories which had been historically ancient and serve as the explosive intestines for a climactic showdown.
Min Gae-in, starring Lee Ha-nee, is a modern day customs officer, who comes across pieces of the conspiracy revolving aliens and decides to go undercover. As her character evolved, unraveling the deep-rooted ties of alien machinery, timehopping, and Earth’s future led to new dimensions of her investigation.
With the infusion of century-spanning warfare and shifting loyalties, the supernatural, and Ahn Lee’s desperate attempts to comeback to her timeline crafted a breathtaking blend of cosmic dlestintion set in time.

The filming of the first and second parts of Alienoid: Return to the Future has been done in parallel. Principal photography was completed in 387 days, from March 2020 to April 2021. The two films were always planned as a single project, which enabled detailed story and world continuity throughout the films.
Themes and Storytelling
The most distinct feature of the Alienoid series is its high-concept narrative framework. It combines traditional Korean history with elements of futuristic sci-fi. The Goryeo Dynasty’s aliens, time gate utilization, and characters’ century-hopping seamlessly integrate into an ambitious and multidimensional narrative structure.
Alienoid: Return to the Future particularly dives deep into the time travel genre. The film’s genre relies on mysticism and martial arts fantasy instead of science fiction. This blend results in a uniquely spellbinding experience in which Taoist wizards clash and duel with alien parasites, while swords ignite bursts of prospective energy.
Other than the mingling of future and ancient Korean culture, the film also touches the complex themes of identity, destiny, sacrifice, and the many other sub-questions which lie within. Fighting the internal war of marrying human and alien is the journey of Mureuk, whereas bearing the weight of knowledge about the future is the struggle of Lee Ahn. They give spectacular performances fraught with emotional undertones that depict the price of heroism and the fragility of timelines.
Visual Style and Effects
Alienoid: Return to the Future is visually stunning and awe-inspiring. From time travel, monumental weapons, and alien warfare to breathtaking accuracy in recreating ancient Korea’s landscapes, the film’s state-of-the-art CGI tech does it all. The movie was also released in IMAX, 4DX, and ScreenX formats which further immerse its audiences.
Costume design is particularly remarkable in the historical scenes, as the mages’ robes, the ancient warrior armor, and sci-fi future predications all showcase visual delineations between timelines.
High octane martial arts fights to alien battles that level cities are all included in the action sequences. The stunning outcome stems from the combination of wire work and digital effects, creating intricate and fast-paced choreography.
IMDb Ratings and Criticism Review
As things stand, Alienoid: Return to the Future has an IMDb rating of 6.0/10 bombs. Feedback remains positive to mixed. Critics and fans alike praise its scope, creativity, and ambition, while some cite the lack of story familiarity as impenetrable.
Appreciation is abundant for Korean cinema fans and genre blend enthusiasts. However, casual viewers might feel overwhelmed with the exposition layers and large cast. The film does require focus, yet the outcome is unparalleled and thrilling for those that dedicate time.
Closing Comments
Alienoid: Return to the Future is perhaps the most daring installment of a multi-genre saga. This sprawling book is packed with dense action sequences and has both an expansive cast and striking visuals. It also includes many climactic, time-bending spectacles, which showcase the groundwork laid by its predecessor.
This feature-length film alienates (pun intended) anyone who appreciates richly detailed sci-fi realms, time travel, or visually immersive cinema. And as Korean cinema’s global recognition rises, Alienoid is yet another example that proves its traditional roots alongside futurism deeply exudes thrilling harmony.
