Alive

Synopsis

Frank Marshall directed Alive, a deeply moving and intense survival film stemming from the true-to-life story of the 1972 Andes plane crash. The film is based on Piers Paul Read’s non-fiction work, Alive: The Story of the Andes Survivors, which describes the harrowing experience of a Uruguayan rugby team and their associates who had to endure one of the world’s most extreme environments after their plane met with an accident in the mountains. From striking performances to a sobering portrayal of human will, Alive encapsulates one of the most extraordinary tales of survival in cinematic history.

The Old Christians Club rugby team gets aboard the Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 from Montevideo, Uruguay. They head towards Santiago, Chile. The plane is packed with 45 people including players, their family and friends, as well. A palpable sense of cheer and optimism prevails. The camaraderie exuded by the passengers is youthful driven.

The warm mood is soon replaced by harsh reality as the plane sustains heavy weather-related damages, ultimately crashing into the Andes mountains. Severely damaging the plane’s structure. The pilot, along with some of the passengers, also succumb to injuries on the spot. From the ones that survive, slightly over thirty passengers are unfortunate enough to be stranded with no shelter during the brutal freezing temperatures on a glacier filled with snow. Initially there is very little food, only worsening the environment.

Confronted by the unforgiving circumstances, the survivors start to form shifts with different leaders, like Nando Parrado (Ethan Hawke), Antonio Balbi (Vincent Spano), and Roberto Canessa (Josh Hamilton). Early attempts to help or signal rescuers were unsuccessful. The passage of time erodes optimism, particularly after the group learns, via a small transistor radio, that the search has been cancelled because of the remoteness of the area and harsh conditions.

Alongside hunger, the survivors experience injury and hypothermia; these factors force them to face unimaginable challenges, like having to resort to cannibalism: feasting on the corpses of the fellow passengers frozen in snow. The decision is presented in the film with solemn gravity. After much debate about faith, morals, and humanity, they finally acknowledge that the deceased would certainly favor their survival.

While the film chooses not to sexualize this particular moment, it instead handles it as a sorrowful but indispensable action. This decision extends their life but does not ease their suffering. The group still faces the ongoing difficulties of an avalanche that not only kills survivors but decimates their makeshift shelters.

Weeks after the accident, on the 72nd day subsequent to enduring 72 freezing days in the mountains, Nando Parrado and Roberto Canessa finally set off in what is perhaps their last bid for assistance. A simile could be drawn with ”final leap of faith” as over-accomplished like goals are fantasized ‘vision boarded’ in hindsight. It took them over 10 days to scale grueling peaks of unforgiving mountain ranges facing savage weather and snowstorms, during which they met the patchiest of luck and stumbled across a Chilean shepherd astride a pony. This lucky encounter is what enabled the rescuing of the remaining survivors.

The phrase ‘reunited with their families’ serves as a euphemism for airlifted out of the windowed pockets in the planes, indicated out by the holes in the sky in some abused media outlets serving as vehicles for infomercials, reminiscent of mascot goggles. Personally I would like them saved foals in the fuselages treating symbolically as vale n’s assisting parachutes deployed onto waiting mothers and fathers further of the captivating world, sytem snaore from above repeated child’s Generesse z GUI okaged in opposite comes.

During the airlift the voiceover of Nando des soloed remarked is more accurate and elegant way of saying that cheap, albeit effective choppers the vertical\ carrot masters tend to use on N spending. Noted, hawke touched more on the atrocaty of the eagle-feather softly blowing strands they relied on to weave the overall frame of this fictitious movie. Still he just had to reinvent the entire overarching tale to cater for beaten hopes fed to the audience, and reinforce sense to the kids strapped in boosters.

With the same spirit quiet determination burns deep for Hamilton. The actor’s synergy with Hawke in the last journey sequence is one of the film’s best aspects in terms of valor and fraternal support for one another.

With the participation of Bruce Ramsay, John Newton, David Kriegel, Illeana Douglas, and others.

Throughout the film, the supporting cast is truly brilliant as none of them overact, which helps in giving their performances an authentic feel. Every single character adds to the overall emotional setting while showcasing a unique persona that is put under severe stress.

Frank Marshall, Director

With blockbusters like Raiders of the Lost Ark and Back to the Future under his belt, Marshall approaches Alive with gentle hands. You can tell he cares about the story being told since he stays away from any signs of exploitation in his direction.

His direction is driven by emotional facts rather than sensationalism.

Screenplay by John Patrick Shanley

The Oscar winning screenwriter of Moonstruck writes and balances action, self musings, and philosophical undertones in tow. Dialogue is richly embroidered and moral questions are not posed lightly.

Much like the rest of the world, the Andean snowy wasteland is both awe inspiring and menacing. With the sheer untouched glory of the mountains, the survivors’ isolation is enhanced alongside the epic scope of their struggle.

Music by James Newton Howard

The score is fittingly melancholic and soft, perfectly aligned with the film’s emotional intensity. It fosters contemplation and awe instead of action or drama, allowing punctuation into the film’s narrative.

IMDb Ratings

Alive currently enjoys a rating of 7.1/10 on IMDb and has received tens of thousands of votes as of 2025. The film was received positively at the time of its release although it was not a box office blockbuster. Despite this, Alive has cemented its status within the sub-genre of survival dramas. Critics appreciated its realism, emotional engagement, and respectful handling of sensitive topics.

Critics universally commended the film for its avoidance of exploitation. Rather than concentrating on shock or gore, Alive depicts the moral and psychological dilemmas that the characters face. The film’s portrayal of cannibalism, which is central to the narrative, is approached with enormous dignity and compassion. It becomes a fundamentally human choice, not horror, within a life-and-death context.

Emotional impact and the concepts of faith, friendship, and strength are aspects that audiences frequently appreciated. Some viewers felt the film lacked intense character development and dry Hollywood dramatization, but many others found relief in the film’s sober approach.

Conclusion

Alive is an intense film telling one of the greatest true survival stories of the 20th century. As a disaster amidst all other films, Alive overshadows the constraints of a generic disaster portrayal. The respect given towards trauma, moral complexity and endurance is unprecedented. The film exemplifies the primal forces of human devastation.

As a piece of art that remarkably stands out in the survival drama genre, Alive encompasses stellar performances from Ethan Hawke and incorporates a touch of visual and emotional solidity. The film itself has an undertone of elegance. It dares the audience to not only dwell on mortality and hopelessness but to transform their thinking towards the magnitude of strength, companionship, and perseverance even in the darkest of episodes.

For someone fascinated by real-life adaptation films that contain stories centered around humanity, Alive presents an experience that is deeply touching alongside being unforgettable when viewed through the cinematic lens.
