Azrael

Synopsis

Set to release in 2024, E.L. Katz’s action-horror thriller “Azrael” is centered in a post-apocalyptic world where spoken language is a crime, silence is crucial for survival, and life is bleak. The movie captures an unrelenting tale around the protagonist Azrael, a fierce and cunning woman trying to navigate through life in a hellish world controlled by a fanatic religious cult.

In this fictional world, mankind has regressed into feral tribes. There exists a certain group called the Silent Order who controls their followers with absolute authority. The ability to speak is not only restricted but is punishable by capital punishment, creating an eerie silence resembling a monastery throughout their dominion. This cult venerates an ancient god which requires complete subservience and bloodletting sacrificial offerings in order to maintain balance and favor of the deity.

Weaving will portray Azrael, who gets caught by the Silent Order at the beginning of the movie. She bears the brunt of her captors’ irrational and abusive behavior zealously resisting leading to a blasphemous spirit within her. She captures the attention of the cult members who choose her as the next sacrificial lamb to satiate the god’s wrath. Azrael, however, is unlike any other prisoner. Determined, Sharp, and bred through the core of a hate filled family cult, Azrael strives to take down the cult that viciously slaughtered her family.

With nothing but her instincts and the will to survive, Azrael flees into the hostile wilderness during a ceremonial offering of her cult. As she escapes, the cult’s enforcers pursue her and she must navigate a deadly landscape filled with traps, betrayal, supernatural dangers, and relentless pursuit.

In the course of the movie, Azrael meets other survivors such as a mute girl and a former cultist who has since lost faith. They form a loose alliance against a common enemy. Their journey is marked by desperate chases, brutal fights, heartbreaking losses, and finally, a climactic fight between Azrael and the High Priest of the Silent order.

“Azrael” is not just a movie about survival; it is a powerful commentary on the struggle against oppressive systems, renewed hope, and the search for freedom in a world that has long forgotten the meaning of hope.

Cast & Crew

Samara Weaving centers the film as ‘Azrael’ bringing forth a riveting performance. Weaving was both vulnerable and fierce in her portrayal of Azrael. As we have come to expect from her performances in Ready or Not or The Babysitter, Weaving does not fail to blend vulnerability with fierce strength. Unlike most actors, in Azrael she ‘speaks’ through movement and expressions while in silence, which gives depth to her character and enhances the overall experience.

E.L. Katz, the director, is celebrated for his work on Cheap Thrills and episodes of TV anthologies like Channel Zero. Katz’s style is unique, visceral, and taut. His direction with Azrael is no different as he teaches viewers to navigate through worlds that are surreal yet painfully real. Extremities such as silence, the dreaded environments, and violence are transformed to artworks under the direction of Katz.

The direction by E.L. Katz and the screenplay by Simon Barrett, known for You’re Next and The Guest, go hand in hand. Barrett does not slow the pace of the film and while doing this builds palpable tension with faith, rebellion, and identity conflicts.

The film’s emotional and thematic depth is enhanced significantly by Katja Herbers’ powerful performance as the High Priestess and Nathan Stewart-Jarrett’s portrayal of the conflicted ex-cultist, despite their supporting roles being limited due to Azrael’s solitary focus.

Cinematography by Anastas N. Michos is particularly striking. The wide, desaturated color palette conveys a sense of despair and enhances the feeling of desolation. Claustrophobic interiors set against wide, barren landscapes serve to reinforce the characters’ perpetual imprisonment within a deadly natural world and human cruelty.

The world’s oppressive silence is matched by the haunting score of Emile Mosseri, which employs minimalist sound and eerie melodies to intensify the feeling of bleakness while underscoring the film’s emotional climaxes.

IMDb Ratings

At the time of writing, Azrael holds a solid IMDb rating of 6.8/10, reflecting generally positive reviews from audiences and critics alike. While Azrael has yet to be deemed a universally adored blockbuster, it has been praised for its originality, atmosphere, as well as the remarkable performance delivered by Samara Weaving.

The lack of dialogue was noted as a particularly bold story-telling choice and it was pointed out that special attention was needed to be given to people’s actions and facial expressions. The absence of sound heightens tension and anxiety, turning each sound into a possible death sentence in the film’s reality. Constant conflict in the film’s narrative was praised for ensuring tension was maintained throughout the entire film and frequently changing the need for background explanation.

Several reviews, though, have pointed out that the bleakness presented in the film, together with its fast-paced rhythm might not appeal to everyone. A handful of critiques claim that world building is lacking too much, meaning certain aspects are too shallow, suggesting that some audience members could have preferred more context surrounding the cult’s creation. Regardless, these shift criticisms do little to impact the film’s primary acceptance.

Acceptance from the audience has been highest among fans of post-apocalyptic fiction and survival horror stories. People in general have appreciated the film due to the high level of violence incorporated into the action, the impressive main character, and the bold visual elements. So far, Samara Weaving’s performance has been cited most often as the defining aspect of the film, earning her praise from many critics.

Simply put, Azrael is an intense and multifaceted journey that traverses a one of a kind dystopian world. It blends surreal action with deep concepts alongside captivating visual narration, giving a refreshing approach on survival horror. Though it has limited appeal, anyone looking for an emotionally powerful experience, centered on masterful performance, Azrael is essential viewing.
