Barot House

Summary

Barot House centers on the life of Amit Barot, a corporate professional played by Amit Sadh. Recently released on Zee5, Barot House is a psychological thriller produced by Ten Years Younger Productions. Amit, alongside his wife Bhavana (played by Manjari Fadnnis) and their four children, resides in a serene suburb of Goa. The house, much like any other middle-class dwelling, appears ordinary on the outside. The contents of the movie, inspired by actual events, reveals the extent of depravity that lies beneath the warmth of family hugs. This chilling story first became public knowledge in August of 2019 after it was made available on Zee5. The spine-chilling events that happen in the thriller, such as the assassination of children by their parents, shock and terrify the audience. The film blazing with unthinkable ideas portrays a sideways glance at the barb of familial relationships.

The daughter is discovered dead and her body is located nearby. This incident is unfortunate and marks the first of a series of events which seem inconceivable and begin to unravel the life of the Barot family. Eventually, several of the younger children are brutally killed. When police begin their investigations, the initial theory is that some outsider with criminal tendencies, or a local maniac would be intruding on their home. Unfortunately, as with all leads, this does not bear fruit, and as outside evidence begins to thicken, attention slowly shifts to the Barot family.

Amit shifts slowly towards a panicked state where he begins to mistrust his wife and question her loyalty due to pre-existing beliefs of her infidelity. The plot is skillfully woven to capture the audience’s psychological inclinations to build an aura of horror and treachery. The plot takes a shocking twist when clues indicate that the murderer might be a relative – astonishingly, a young one.

The twist begins with a suspicion that begins to grow around Malhar, Barot’s son, who poses a hinting challenge of emotion and compassion during a heart wrenching family tragedy. Further scrutiny through the psychiatric lens reveals that Malhar seems to present the symptoms associated with a severe personality disorder which, if true, would permit him to commit the described murders devoid of remorse.

The more the investigation goes deeper, the suspenseful blur between guilty and innocent stretches further alongside the balance between nature and nurture, forcing the audience to confront the startling prerequisite that an innocent child can manifest sheer violence. The intricate web of psychological theories surrounding the climax portrays not only the unexplainable acts but the parents’ emotional breakdown as they struggle in accepting from whom they created, and raised, mustered such fiendish deeds.

Cast & Crew

Main Cast:

Amit Sadh as Amit Barot: Amit Sadh shines in the role of Amit Barot, often exhibiting his inner conflict as an overwhelmed father “holding down the fort” under terrifying revelations about his family. His performance as a broken man who is grappling with grief and rage sometimes vacillates between the two in helpless state, allows the audience to connect to the film on a whole other level.

Manjari Fadnis as Bhavana Barot: Manjari’s character is a mother suffering from grief, guilt, and betrayal. Further, her character is unique—to put it mildly—because she is emotionally conflicted due to her past decisions and circumstances. In portraying Bhavana, Fadnnis goes beyond bare-boned vulnerability and brings the nuance of empathy to the character, making the audience sympathize with her ordeal.

Aaryan Menghji as Malhar Barot: Aaryan Menghji delivered the most impressive performance as the standout young actor featured in the film. It is not an easy task to depict a child with sociopathic tendencies, but Aaryan does so quite chillingly. His demeanor, along with his emotionless expression, makes him an unsettling character, thus completely embodying Malhar.

Kishaa Arora and Shree Swara Dubey: Supporting roles of the other Barot children who serve to add to the tragedy and suspense of the plot.

Bugs Bhargava Krishna: An experienced actor and also a director, Krishna clearly has control of narrative pacing and atmosphere in Barot House. His direction in terms of pacing is slow, but that is because he intentionally focuses on the psychological aspects rather than gratuitous violence or unnecessary jump scares.

Sanjeev K Jha and Bugs Bhargava Krishna: Like the rest of the film, the writing is tight, driven by emotion, and suspenseful. Family confrontational dialogues are sharp and woven with subtext, which enables the psychological side of the story to be told naturally.

Cinematography:

Vivek Shah: The visuals in Barot House are particularly powerful when it comes to constructing tension. The camera often stays focused on a face, or a shadow, which creates an uncanny feeling of calm against the disturbed nature of the story.

Music:

The score remains lowkey. It amplifies suspense without overtaking scenes, It is used best during moments that require emphasis, be it revelation or dread.

IMDb Ratings and Critical Reception

Currently, Barot House has a score of 7.3/10 on IMDb, which, while not perfect suggests acceptance by wide audiences. Viewers and critics appreciated the movie for its engrossing plot and powerful performances.

Critics lauded the film for its depiction of mental illness in an almost unchallenged manner domestically. Its loose based on a true story adds an element of horror more deftly than fiction could achieve. This is uniquely disturbing in its bold exploration of child psychopathy considering it’s an Indian thriller.

Many consider Amit Sadh’s performance one of the strongest in his career and laud his performance. Critics further appreciated the directorial efforts to maintain suspense throughout the film without resorting to melodrama or cliched horror elements.

A couple of people did take issue with the pacing, particularly in the second act, and some discussions of certain psychological concepts went less in depth than they could have. Nonetheless, most people seem to agree that the film’s dark and minimalist narration complements its haunting subject.

Conclusion

As described above, Barot House is deeply disturbing, an unsettling psychological thriller that explores the nightmarish idea of evil lurking in one’s house. It strips away the facade of a nuclear family and reveals the psychological turmoil that resides within. The film portrays, through captivating performances and unnerving stories, an unsettling yet captivating tale through its compelling premise and taut narrative.
