Synopsis
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is set to release in 2024 and is an American film featuring monster action and adventure. It serves as the sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong (2021) and is Wingard’s creation. The film is the fifth installment of Legendary Pictures’ MonsterVerse and focuses on expanding the enduring rivalry between Godzilla and King Kong. The film is set to further expand the narrative about The Hollow Earth and introduce some dangerous new challenges.
The ongoing narrative begins following the uneasy peace that exists between Godzilla and Kong. Kong now lives in the Hollow Earth, a vast inner world filled with bizarre life forms and ancient remnants of lost civilizations – a world of new wonders. He lonely wanders his steppes, hoping to find clues about his beginnings and make a home for himself. Godzilla, the titular character, still serves the role of a guardian to Earth and controls the delicate relationship between the humans and other titans that threaten to destroy everything.
Simultaneously, a new and foreboding danger arises from the sunless regions of Hollow Earth: The Skar King, a savage and primitive ape-like Titan who rules over a concealed kingdom of his kind. The Skar King attempts to break free from the confines of Hollow Earth in order to defeat all other Titans and rule over the surface world. With a growing legion and an ancient cold-blooded weapon of his—a frost-powered Titan named Shimo—The Skar King threatens the entire planet like never before.
Shimo is an unprecedented danger to all living beings.
Rebecca Hall reprises her role as Dr. Ilene Andrews, a titan of behavioral science, biology, and Hollow Earth. Skar King’s attempts at escape and break free sparks chaotic disorder, and his powers awaken something in her adopted daughter Jia (Kaylee Hottle). She begins to have visions and a warning set of signs of the Skar King’s rise. Along them is Bernie Hayes (Brian Tyree Henry), a reluctant hero and conspiracy podcaster. Along with him is Pilot Trapper (Dan Stevens), a Titan expert with rough edges yet charming wit.
The film oscillates between grand-scale battles between monsters and the stumblings of a handful of humans trying to piece things together and bring some semblance of order.
Kong must face the trauma of his species’ history while seeking assistance from an old foe as Skar King sets his plans into motion. Godzilla detects the disturbance and heads back to Hollow Earth. Their alliance forms not out of friendship, but survival. The two Alpha Titans understand that it is only by working together that the destruction of Earth is avoided.
The last battle, fought both in the Hollow Earth and on the surface, is everything in terms of scope and action. It highlights the development of powers from each Titan. Godzilla now glows with a new reddish-pink energy form while Kong wield a weapon from ancient Titan technology. The two face the Skar King and Shimo in a battle that decides the fate of their worlds.

WINGARD, Adam Godzilla vs Kong’s now Adam Wingard. Godzilla vs Kong has succeeded and with this success achieves Wingard’s vision of Titan warfare. Exploring the emotional and visual scales. Blurring the lines between genre storytelling and action films, Wingard is known for his spectacle. He delivers “heart” to this chapter of the story as well.
Writers
The combination of Terry Rossio, Simon Barrett, and Jeremy Slater work on the screenplay. They attempt to merge drama with the mythology of the monsters in the story, balancing the intricacies of human emotion.
Main Cast
Ilene Andrew’s character is reprised by Rebecca Hall who adds depth to the Titan researcher and provides continuity from the last film.
As the ‘quirky’ conspiracy theorist, Bernie Hayes is played by Brian Tyree Henry who brings humor as well as an outsider’s viewpoint.
A new confident character named Trapper is played by Dan Stevens bringing in additional energy as well as a little bit of wildcard unpredictability to the team.
Because of her psychic link with Kong, Jia played by Kaylee Hottle is a pivotal character and so are her cultural ties to the Iwi people.
Rachel House plays Hampton while Alex Ferns and Fala Chen portray Mikael and the Iwi Queen respectively. All which expand the human cast ensemble.
Production Team
Ben Seresin was responsible for the cinematography and capturing the Hollow Earth’s surreal majesty alongside the action destruction-ridden scenes while the Gordon and the Titans battled on the surface.

Visuals and Action
The film’s visuals flare came out exquisitely. The innovation put into the design of the “Hollow Earth” sequences are truly remarkable. The luminous landscapes and gravity-defying fauna and architecture are jaw dropping. The visceral and intense detail infused into the Kaiju battles demonstrates incredible levels of choregraphic detail. Each of Godzilla’s and Kong’s golden moments of battle, whether it be the nuclear reactor glowing Godzilla or Kong with his battle-axe, had all eyes glued to the screen. Fans of the series were thrilled and satisfied with the visual shear greatness.
In all the great vile and repugnacy that encompasses the MonsterVerse, the Skar King stands out as the harshest villain of them all. The Skar King displays a much more fierce, cruel, and vengeful side compared to the other Titans who act purely on instinct of ancient duty. As dreadful as his whole demeanor is, which reasonates through the alliance with Shimo his added frost breath Titan ally toward the final acts, it adds more excitement than one can ask for to the plot.
Themes and Tone
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire expertly explores many action packed themes alongside legacy, evolution, and coexistence. With all the action slinging about, one cannot but help feel Kong’s search for identity and isolation hit strongly on the heart. The essence that even former rivals coming from such deeply rooted opposing sides need unity for survival being the finest resonates equally alongside Godzilla and Kong’s relationship throughout the movie. They are not portrayed simply as monsters, andmore as defendars, ancient force of will and war, protectors of the delicate balance between earth and nature.
The humor added by the human characters, like everything else in the movie, oscillates between mythology and levity, which is a stark contrast from the serious undertone of the movie. Some viewers may find the struggle for balance unreal or too comical for their liking, while others may find solace or even appreciate the much needed relief between battles.
Reception

The film garnered an IMDb rating of roughly 6 out of 10, which indicates that it hasn’t received negative feedback, but has indeed received mixed to moderately positive reviews. Audiences showered praise on the movie for the jaw dropping visual effects, lack of creativity in the action sequences, and the epic monster alliances. However, critics of the movie did point out the lack luster human sub plots and narrative depth in comparison to the previous movies like Godzilla (2014) and Kong: Skull Island.
Even so, kaiju cinema fans, along with the general audience are pleased with the flick and its dominion at the box office depicting disapproval of the critics, signaling that the franchise’s appeal yet holds suffuicient strength. Great attention to the world-building of the Hollow Earth and the new Titans introduced is good for the upcoming sequels and spin-offs.
Conclusion
Just like the other movies of the franchise, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire is one of the most jaw dropping movies of the MonsterVerse contenders with action packed scenes of visually appealing graphics, made just how it was advertised showcasing older monsters alongside new ones. The negatives however are the underwhelming plot compared to the previously released ones. In contrast, the creativity interwoven rot of destruction paired alongside having the immeasurable scaling are the core pillars the franchise stands on.
By adding fascinating new enemies and expanding the exploration of Hollow Earth, The New Empire establishes even more elaborate plans for films in the MonsterVerse universe. Regardless of whether the goal is to listen to the might fearsome roar of the creatures, watch stunning battles, or relive the iconic moments of the titans battling neck to neck, the movie undeniably displays that the era of creatures is far from coming to an end.
