Synopsis
Alfonso Cuarón directed Gravity, a science fiction thriller featuring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. In a breathtaking climax, Stone expends her remaining energy to board the Chinese capsule and to brace herself for the blazing plunge through Earth’s atmosphere. As her pod crash lands in a sea, she escapes from the sinking capsule and swims to land which she reaches in a symbolic rebirth. Stone crawls onto ground. A deep breath reveals the Earth’s air to her, as she for the first time in ages. The film does not conclude with heroic music but instead with quiet breaths and nature. This highlights the beauty of life on Earth.

Portraying a character whose emotional journey shifts drastically from fright to fierce determination, Bullock portrays a career-defining performance. The poignant architecture of grief, fear, and unwavering determination is what forms the emotional core of the film. The character’s self-imposed isolation is profoundly extensive, and though the interactions with other characters are few, Bullock comes close to single handedly carrying the weight of the film.
George Clooney as Matt Kowalski
While Clooney has limited screen time, the charm and calm demeanor he portrays compliments the intense pace of the film. Even if the audience can’t see him a lot he still serves as a guide and symbol of humanity within the film.
