Plot Synopsis
A young female drug addict, Darby Thorne, learns of her mother’s hospitalization due to a severe brain aneurysm. On hearing the news, Darby plans on meeting her mother, which forces her to escape the rehabilitation center to drive towards Salt Lake City. But on her way, she gets caught in a blizzard and has to pull over at an isolated rest stop.
While rest area Darby comes across four strangers: Ash, Sandi, Lars, and Ed. The group settles in as the story unfolds and the characters have their secrets to cover. Searchingearnestly for a cell phone signal, Darby runs into a van in a parking lot which turns into a nightmare as she finds a young girl named Jay locked up.
When it hits Darby that one of the patrons in the rest stop has to be the kidnapper, it puts her in severe danger. With the weather conditions within and outside the rest stop being so bad that communication isn’t an option, she sets off to figure out who the kidnapper is to save the girl. As she rescues the girl the alliances of the characters within the story shift, putting Darby in a deadly loss or win cat and mouse game where each choice can make or break her life.
Cast and Character
Havana Rose Liu portrays Darby Thorne and does so exceptionally well.Her performance in general and as the determined and resourceful protagonist in particular captures the essence of the film really well.
Danny Ramirez in the role of Ash adds even more charm and reality to character. With the easy going nature of the character, it sets boundaries to other motivations, sullying deeper intentions to be set. This role really tests his abilities.
Sandi fills up the role alongside David Rysdahl as Lars. He portrays Lars with oddity along with unignorable unpredictability which adds suspense to rest of the film.
Dale Dickey as Sandi: As Sandi, Dickey illustrates a woman ensnared in suspicion with remarkable complexity.
Dennis Haysbert as Ed: Haysbert adds weight to Ed, a former Marine whose seemingly calm demeanor conceals a violent history.
Mila Harris as Jay: Harris’s portrayal of the abducted girl is both sympathetic and courageous, transforming Jay’s struggle into something profoundly resonant.
Direction and Cinematography
Damien Power, the director, has made good use of the limited space throughout the film. The rest stop shifts from a mundane location to a pressure cooker while a storm brews outside and the paranoia inside keeps escalating. Simon Raby, the cinematographer, captured the rest stop’s claustrophobic nature with tight angles and harsh lighting, which added to the sense of isolation and danger.
